Bournemouth
Bournemouth is a large and vibrant cosmopolitan coastal town in the heart of Dorset
on the South Coast in South West England. Bournemouth offers seven miles of blue
flag golden beaches, picturesque countryside to explore, beautiful parks and over
2000 acres of gardens and a thriving nightlife scene. The town has it all - a rich
heritage, excellent range of shopping facilities, restaurants and superb hotels,
and of course the beautiful beach and pier - the ideal seaside holiday destination
within the UK. Bournemouth was founded in 1810 by Lewis Tregonwell, and has grown
to become the largest settlement in Dorset, with the near-by Dorset coastline offering
everything from picturesque harbours, long sandy beaches, dramatic cliff top formations,
hidden coves and rock pools. The famous Jurassic Coast is a natural wonder and easily
accessible from Bournemouth.
The Bournemouth railway station and bus station are walking distance from the town
centre.
There are many hidden gems in rural Dorset such as ancient woodlands, open heath
land, historic market towns and quaint villages and hamlets, all within easy reach
of Bournemouth. The ancient New Forest, England's newest National Park, is also
a great attraction and is only 30 minutes' drive from Bournemouth.
Bournemouth Beach
Bournemouth beach is Bournemouth's main attraction and often described as the St.
Tropez of England, attracting tourists from all over the UK and World every year.
Bournemouth beach is also one of Britain's safest beaches with eight prestigious
Blue Flag awards - demonstrating the high standard of cleanliness of the beach and
the clear swimming water. This makes Bournemouth beach very safe and perfect for
families, especially children who will love this giant sandy playground! There is
a bouncy castle, a land train and traditional amusements at Bournemouth pier. To
relax on the beach there are over 250 beach huts available or striped deck chairs,
sun beds and parasols. In the sea there is pedalo and boat hire, jet-skiing and
banana boats.
If you fancy learning how to surf then Bournemouth Surf School is ideal, offering
a selection of different courses to suit all levels and requirements; from complete
beginners to experts. Surfers can choose to take part in group or specialist private
lessons, with beach lifeguard, surf coach and instructor courses to choose from.
Bournemouth Piers
Bournemouth has 2 piers on the seafront - Bournemouth pier and Boscombe pier.
Bournemouth pier sits in the heart of Bournemouth and is a popular tourist attraction.
A quieter pier to your average pier, Bournemouth Pier is ideal for a gentle stroll,
yet there is still plenty of attractions with two new restaurants, an amusement
arcade featuring all the latest games, bar, theatre at the end of the pier, and
children's entertainments including a Funfair. Traditional deck chairs are available
together with regular excursion boat rides.
Jurassic Coast
The Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site on the English Channel coast in southern
England, stretching from East Devon to Dorset. At 185 million years old, the Jurassic
Coast is England's only natural World Heritage Site made up of Jurassic, Triassic
and Cretaceous rocks. Consisting of 95 miles of truly stunning coastline, the entire
length of the Jurassic Coast can be walked along using the South West Coast Path.
The highest point on the Jurassic Coast, and on the entire south coast of Britain,
is Golden Cap at 191 metres (627 ft). Bournemouth is a Gateway Town to the Jurassic
Coast and a great place to stay to explore the Jurassic Coast.
Russell Cotes Arts Gallery & Museum
Bournemouth is home to the Russell Cotes Arts Gallery & Museum - one of the most
unique and quirky museums in the world. This award-winning museum and art gallery
displays fascinating collections from the world travels of Sir Merton and Lady Annie
Russell-Cotes, including a Victorian art collection and Japanese art and artefacts.
There are also newly restored Victorian gardens to enjoy outside.
Business in Bournemouth
Bournemouth is considered to be a regional centre of business, home of the Bournemouth
International Centre and financial companies that include: Liverpool Victoria and
Standard Life Healthcare. This makes Bournemouth ideal for business.
Bournemouth Airport
Previously known as Hurn Airport and Bournemouth International Airport, Bournemouth
Airport is located 4 miles North of Bournemouth, just a 10 minute taxi ride away
from the town centre. Every hour, seven days a week, the Bournemouth Airport Shuttle
bus links the airport to the town centre.
With regular scheduled flights from the airport frequently serve Western and Eastern
Europe and the Mediterranean with occasional charter and seasonal services serving
Northern Africa, North America and the Caribbean, Bournemouth Airport handles over
a million passengers annually. Airlines flying from Bournemouth Airport include
EasyJet and Ryanair. Ryanair and Thomson Airways are the primary users of the airport.
In 2008, Bournemouth Airport was ranked best airport in the United Kingdom and 3rd
best in the world, after Singapore Changi Airport and Hong Kong International Airport,
by the Daily Telegraph Travel Awards.
