THE BAD BIT: Sadly on the day I required and emergency extraction of an upper molar this left me in more than a degree of discomfort, unable to eat and no alcohol had to cancel. Some Valentine Night away (with the wife). THE GOOD BIT: Spoke to Michael who was very understanding and readily offered to let me to transfer the booking to another night. Having made the booking through a third party website I was very impressed by the offer and I am looking forward to our night away next week, when Michael will get our thanks and drink from us. On past experience of this Hotel I know that they will deserve straight 5 * across the board.

General Information

An 18th century coaching inn of character with open fires, a wealth of beams & horse brasses, standing in the cobbled square of this pretty Georgian market town. The George is a friendly, family-run Inn, enjoying an excellent reputation for good food in both our Restaurant & Courtyard Bar, together with some fine wines & real ales.

For those who enjoy browsing, Easingwold is full of antique treasures, whilst being only a short drive away from the centre of York with its many historic attractions.

Accommodation

Bedrooms at The George have en-suite facilities. Some are traditionally furnished, some are designed in a more modern style. Each room has a colour television and radio, direct-dial telephone, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities on a welcome tray. Wi-Fi is available throughout most of the hotel.

Restaurant

The George's cosy oak-beamed Market Place Restaurant offers a wide range of dishes from its menu. We also serve a traditional one, two or three course Sunday lunch. Coffee is served in the relaxing atmosphere of our residents' lounge, with its antique kitchen range. Parties and special occasion dinners are a speciality.

The original open Courtyard is now an attractive area where a wide selection of freshly prepared Bar Meals are served. An emphasis is put on fresh locally sourced ingredients.

The Bar in The George has evolved over the years with the removal of walls and small rooms into a series of connected areas. A fine selection of real ales is served, including locally brewed beers pulled straight from casks conditioned in our cellars. Additional winter warmth is provided by open log fires in the bar and lounge areas.

Galtres Fitness Centre

Fully air conditioned, state of the art community fitness centre with a wide range of cardiovascular and resistance equipment within a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. As a resident of The George Hotel, you are entitled to use the Galtres Fitness Centre during your stay which, though under seperate managament, is adjacent to the hotel!

Location & Things to do in York

The George is situated in Easingwold, just off the A19 trunk road, and is a splendid base for exploring the area. The City of York, North York Moors, the Howardian Hills, the Dales and many hamlets made famous in James Herriot's popular tales are almost on our doorstep.

Castle Howard of 'Brideshead Revisited' fame is close by and many attractions of the East Coast, The Dales and North Yorkshire Moors National Parks are less than an hour's drive away.

Easingwold boasts many sporting facilities and an attractive 18-hole golf course is less than a mile away.

Charles I granted a charter to Easingwold to hold a free market every Friday and two annual wakes or fairs and Easingwold continues to do so to this day. It's as pleasurable to wander around stalls in the Market Place as it is to browse in the numerous antique shops in the town.

The nearby Tourist Information Centre has leaflets with details of the town and maps of local country walks - you can find out many fascinating details about the attractive Georgian buildings which surround the cobbled Market Square.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Food very good although wished I'd ordered a small portion of scampi on the second night as there was too many chips on the plate. Room well presented and clean. Plenty of drawers and hangers and everything was out of sight unlike in some modern rooms were you have open shelves and open hanging space which makes the room look messy. Bathroom well decorated with a great shower over the bath and a very efficient heater on the wall. Only problem in the bathroom was that the heater was on one wall and the towel rail on the opposite wall which meant that the towels did not dry off properly between showers. Problem in the bedroom which we remembered was the same when we stayed several years ago - energy efficient bulbs in the bedside lamps meant there was not enough light to read in bed. Worried it might be noisy as we had a room at the front overlooking the market square but we didn't have any problem at all with noise. Overall we had a good time and would recommend The George and stay again.

Just returned from an excellent one night stay at the George. Clean comfortable bedroom (tea and coffee making facilities, free bottled water and hairdryer). Location felt completely safe for a female travelling on her own and the Hotel has a quaint old world feel to it! All staff extremely helpful and attentive with a genuine interest in ensuring I had everything I needed. Food delicious - I had fish and chips for dinner and I'd thoroughly recommend the cooked breakfast and hot croissants! Hotel looks onto a lovely market square with a cobbled street and a small market selling all sorts of local produce on a Friday morning. I would definitely return and recommend! Thank you!

The George is wonderfully situated on the market square of this lovely market town. We were in room 5, just above the bar, but it was quiet and no disturbances. The room was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent with a variety of tasty choices. The staff were helpful, one lady in particular sorted out bus timetables and tourist guides for us. The bus for York leaves from outside the door, which is really helpful.

If you are visiting York this really is a great place to stay being approx twenty minutes to the Rawcliffe Bar park and ride site. A lovely old pub which is comfortable and welcoming. Some good real ales and food are available. We had a large room at the front of the building with a view over the market square, it was clean and comfortable as was the large en-suite bathroom. The owners, Kay and Michael are superb hosts being friendly and helpful. This pub appears to have a good local trade which adds to the atmosphere in bar at night!

The George Hotel is a welcoming coaching inn right in the heart of Yorkshire. The rooms are clean and well-appointed with a certain quirkiness which goes with such an old, characterful building. Michael, Kay and all the staff are friendly and helpful without being intrusive. The hotel is close to York, the North York's Moors and within an hour of the coast. It's worth remembering that the breakfasts are great!

We would always return to The George again as from the moment you step inside you are met with a warm and friendly welcome. The rooms are comfortable and spacious and nothing is too much trouble for the friendly owners and staff. The most excellent food is available with a great deal of choice. The hotel is centrally located with buses outside in the market place adjacent to York and many other of the towns and villages. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

we recently spent 2 nights at the george and had a lovely stay, the management and staff were friendly and helpful. We had a ground floor room at the rear of the hotel which was comfortable and quiet apart from about 7.15 am when some people came in, maybe staff coming in to start breakfast. The breakfast was good but for me the evening meals were outstanding the chef is to be complimented on his cooking. The first night i had goats cheese souffle to start which was delicious the game casserole as a main and cheese and biscuits as dessert again delicious i would give it 10/10. All in all nothing really to complain about. Excellent.!!!!!
