Things to do

For an airport stopover with real character, you can stay at the Potters Heron Hotel and fly out from Southampton, just eight miles away. For a cultural break, visit nearby Winchester, an unspoilt cathedral city on the edge of the South Downs. Discover world famous historic ships - HMS Victory, the Mary Rose ad HMS Warrior 1860 at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard or the unique collection of the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. Make a weekend of it and head off to explore the New Forest National Park, the largest remaining area of lowland heath in Europe.

Take a short hop to the Isle of Wight and discover why Osborne House was a favourite retreat for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Bought in 1845, the house and its 1000 acres offered a base far away from the pressures of court life at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. After Albert died, Queen Victoria spent most of her time at Osborne House and she died there in 1901. Since her death, little has changed and the house still holds many of the royal couple's possessions, photographs and paintings.
