Far too many to attempt to list here. Perhaps this is one of the great attractions of the area as every day results in a new discovery. Cullen House and Cullen Old Kirk simply demand a visit, to admire both the architecture and the history with a trip to the Community Library a must to explore the dramatic history of these sites as documented by local researchers. For the more energetic take a walk from the Harbour and head East past the famous Pet Cemetery and follow the path to the Giant Steps. These stone steps were constructed by a local man literally with his bare hands. Following this path towards Findlater Castle you will stumble across the hidden bay of Sunnyside Beach.Should you follow the road towards Elgin, you will reach Fochabers which contains a vast array of Antique shops and just outside the town is the world famous Baxters of Speyside. Visiting Baxters is a must, at least to sample one of their freshly made pancakes topped with Baxters jam.Walking and CyclingThere are many walks in the local area suitable for all abilities. Several members of Cullen Tourist Initiative have compiled a map of nine local routes. These routes vary from a simple stroll along the old viaduct to the more challenging walks along the cliffs to Findlater Castle and the climb up the Bin. These maps are available at Hotel reception. There is currently major development of more integrated walking/ cycling routes in the Moray area. Mountain bikes and helmets are available for hire. The Hotel can arrange bike hire on your behalf. There are several cycle paths in the area taking in the stunning views as well as forest trails for the more adventurous.Nature trailsThere can be few areas in Scotland which deliver such a diverse array of wildlife and habitats in such a small area. The Moray Coast frequently delights both visitor and local with regular sightings of dolphins and porpoises. Minke Whales visit in the Autumn to calf and in December 2006 a pod of Sperm Whales were spotted. Add to this mix Basking Sharks, Seals, Otters and sea birds. Heading inland you will be entranced with sightings of Barn Owls, Bats, Badgers, Deer and Buzzards. Osprey regulary visit the mouth of the river Spey to fish. Many a evening Bats can be seen flying around Cullen Harbour. This sight is simply mesmerising. The Wildlife Centre at Spey Bay, Macduff Marine Aquarium and the North East Falconry Centre all provide opportunities to learn more about our local wildlife.Malt Whiskey TrailIt is diffcult to establish the exact moment in history when both distilling and Scotch Malt Whisky were born. The earliest historical reference is The Scottish Exchequer Rolls of 1494 where it is noted that Friar John Corr bought "8 bolls of malt", enough barley to produce 1500 bottles. The first official reference to a distillery is made in the late 1600's. In an official document it is noted that a distillery existed called Ferintosh which was owned by Duncan Forbes of Culloden. In the 21st century Scotch Malt Whisky remains the best selling spirit in the world. No wonder when you consider that this premium product is made from the best natural ingredients of Scotland using techniques and equipment which have been developed over hundreds of years. No matter your palate there is a malt whisky out there for you, it is simply a matter of discovery. Where better to begin your journey than in Moray - Malt Whisky Country. ActivitiesThe vast range of activities on and around the Moray Coast is staggering. Some activities are already covered briefly in the Local Area page. Water based activities include dolphin watching trips, powerboating, surfing and sea fishing. Outdoor pursuits include archery, clay pigeon shooting, horse riding, walking, cycling, orienteering and birdwatching. The local Countryside Rangers regularly organise events along the Coast. For those who strive for a less hectic break why not visit Elgin and take in the history, architecture and of course the shops including Johnstones of Elgin Woollen Mill. To escape the madding crowd, a trip along the winding coastal roads will reveal picturesque fishing villages and their harbours.GolfThe Moray Coast plays host to some of the best golf courses in Scotland. There are over 70 courses within one hours drive of the Cullen Bay Hotel, some well known and reknowned courses, others hidden gems. Many local courses offer special discounted rates to residents inlcuding Cullen Golf Club which lies in front of the Hotel. The course dates from 1870 when Tom Morris laid the first nine holes and was later extended to a full eighteen holes by Charlie Neaves. Buckpool, Strathlene, Royal Tarlair and Keith all offer superb golf within ten minutes of the Hotel. Golf tee times and catering can be arranged prior to your arrival by the Hotel. Taxi transfers from the Airport or Train Station can also be arranged. Special rates are available for groups of ten golfers or more (based on sharing twin rooms).Fishing and ShootingThe Grampian region plays host to some of the finest fishing and shooting in the world. Rivers Ythan, Spey, Lossie and Deveron to name but a few. There is a wide choice of fishing ranging from Sea Angling through to exclusive beat fishing on rivers such as the Spey. Many local estates offer a variety of experiences whether it be clay shooting or deer and pheasant stalking.
