History of the site

It was the third Duke of Montrose (1755-1836) who planted the east side of Loch Lomond with Oakwood trees. It is difficult to imagine today but this tranquil forest was once an industrial site where every spring women and children coppicing trees and stripping their bark. Workers distilled pyroligneous acid from the wood, and used it to fix dyes in the great textile factories of the Vale of Leven.

Now you can enjoy the popular and picturesque woodland site which is ideal for families, walkers and those wanting to experience a short outdoor break in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.
