History of the site

It was the third Duke of Montrose (1755-1836) who planted the east side of Loch Lomond with Oakwood trees. It is difficult to imagine today but this tranquil forest was once an industrial site where every spring women and children coppicing trees and stripping their bark. Workers distilled pyroligneous acid from the wood, and used it to fix dyes in the great textile factories of the Vale of Leven.

Now you can enjoy the popular and picturesque woodland site which is ideal for families, walkers and those wanting to experience a short outdoor break in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.

A super campsite right next to the Loch. We had a great one night stay. The facilities are basic, but perfect for a camping stop along the West Highland Way or just as a decent camping stop whether you're heading a long way North or a long way South. My girlfriend would not have camped here for longer than one night, but the facilities are as advertised. No midges (or not noticable) in early May time. Next time, fingers crossed for sunshine.

Great place to stop while walking the West HIghland Way as the route goes right through the site. Loch side pitches are well spaced to give that more of a wild camping experience. Pitches are a mixture of grass and sandy/gravel and appear to be good at self draining. Central pitches look a wee bit wetter after a few days of rain. Toilets are well kept. Plenty of clean water. Would certainly be back and at £5.00 a night you can't complain --- unless you are like the friend that was with me, no showers, no shop, is the "Drinking water" drinkable. What did he expect I don't know - it is a wild camp experience not a holiday park. Only word of warning for the WHW walkers is you have to walk past the pitches to get your voucher from the very friendly and helpful warden and then walk back to pitch your tent, after a 40km walk do you need to walk further.

Great campsite right beside Loch Lomond. Perfect location & can have a barbecue or hire fire pit. Was plenty of space & no midgies at this time of year which was big positive. Toilets are composting with no water but good & clean - no smell so you will be pleasently surprised. Good value at £5 per person per night & we had tent each so much better value than other campsites on Loch Lomond. West Highland Way runs right through the site so ideal for stop over. Wardens are very helpful.

Arrived after very long day walking to find that only composting toilets available, now I know the reasoning for this but I think it should be mentioned on the booking form . Loch side pitches beautiful but difficult to get comfortable on for a good nights sleep. Overall ok but later on during our walk got wild camping for nothing with as much facilities

Visited Sallochy campsite with my Boyfriend, Mum and Step dad. We arrived just after 2pm, it was stunning, my mum and step dad were first time campers and this was the perfect place for them to have a try. The only thing we had an issue with was the website said our pitch would be available from 2pm, we had booked loch side and we went for a wander to see what was available. As we had never been before we didn't realise that we could just choose our own campsite and were worried that if we pitched the tents we would be asked to move. There was no warden/ranger at the campsite between 12.30pm and 4 pm (which it does state on the website) but we did select our check in time to be 2pm.... why give the option? When the rangers did show up they couldn't have been friendlier, they couldn't do enough to help us. The rules say that you cannot have fires or forrage for wood, but the wood and the fire pit we hired cost £10! (a bit steep if people aren't allowed to have fires!) and there was a £10 deposit on top of that which we were given back the next day. Again the warden/ranger that turned up in the morning couldn't have been nicer. She was excellent and again couldn't do enough for us.Over all stunning view, good facilities, fantastic staff, just a bit confusing at parts and the cost of the fire pit a bit steep. Had a lovely night though and definitely will be back!

This is a wonderful, simplistic, Loch side campsite. It is totally beautiful, and calm and gives you a great experience of Loch Lomond. My main advice is to be a bit cautious as the location isn't entirely clear from an OS map as there is another Forestry Commission campsite about 2km down the road which we thought we were aiming for until we happened upon the site. It doesn't have showers but its a great site for a short stay. I can imagine it might be a bit treacherous for midges later in the season, but it was great for an Easter break.

Took my 2 boys for their first camping trip and they loved it! The staff were absolutely brilliant and couldn't have been any more helpful or friendly. The only downside was the lack of info on how to get into the camping car park and that you just pick your pitch on the Lochside as first come first pick. That small gripe aside, we had a fantastic time and will definately be back:)

What can I say? It was just great. Myself, my partner and our 6 year old son had a thoroughly amazing time, plenty of fresh air & beautiful scenery, lovely walks and not to mention lovely, helpful staff who simply leave you to it. We are definitely going back next year, this time for longer. The compost toilets weren't as scary as what I thought they would be either! Plus the midges weren't that bad, the heat off the camping stove kept them away, plus we had Avon Skin So Soft spray to deter them. There is a sink for getting fresh water and washing dishes. The whole site was well kept, clean and well organised. We had a pitch right next to the loch and it was so relaxing & serene. It was just what we needed, sorry but you can stick your over priced all inclusives abroad. Sallochy was just perfect. Thank you :)

As long as you're not expecting anything other than the most basic facilities, you will not be disappointed with Sallochy Campsite. The scenic location is second to none, with the Lochside pitches literally on the banks of Loch Lomond. The central pitches are only a few metres away from the Loch and are closer to the facilities - a tap with drinking water located above a couple of sinks that are perfect for washing up (the used water is filtered through a wetland so it's all environmentally sound) and a couple of composting toilets which are equipped with toilet paper and anti-bacterial hand wash. The parking is free for campers and you can hire a fire pit and wood for £10 (plus a £10 refundable deposit). The nearest shop is 5 miles away in Balmaha, and sells a wide range of items including sandwiches and tinned foods, as well as fresh vegetables and meat. We were happy to find it was open until 10pm on most days, so we could get back from a hike and still buy fresh food! Highly recommended.

The site is easily accessible whether on foot or wheels and is clean and tidy. There is a eco friendly toilet block and facility with running water for drinking, cooking and washing. The central camping area is spacious and fenced off whilst the individual lochside pitches are marked off. Fire pits and logs are available from the warden who is on hand to help and advise if required. This site offers great value for money and the views are stunning. The only negative aspect is the dreaded Scottish midgie -GO PREPARED and you will have a great time.

I arrived at Sallochy at 19:30 with my 5yo son for a wee camping night. It was the last weekend of his school summer holidays and i thought he would enjoy something different. We parked the car and spoke to a ranger called Janice who checked my details and told me where my pitch was(in the trees). I explained my son loved playing at the waters edge so she asked what size a tent i had and said she had a small pitch available on the shore line. This turned out perfect so we pitched the tent and then asked about wood for a fire. We then paid for a bag of already cut pieces of wood which turned out to be hard wood and not soft pine. We used a fire pit and soon had a great fire which lasted through to when we ritired for the night around 23:00. The next morning after getting up i made breakfast for us using my stove. We then packed everything away and left the area the way we got it. I'd just like to say thanks for an enjoyable camping trip made hastlefree on the Lochside...and the two Rangers who were friendly and obviously enjoy their work. Thanks Clinton (Deputy Coxswain Loch Lomond Rescue Boat)

The campsite is very new and has excellent facilities and grounds. It would have been nice to get a Loch side campsite, but I booked last minute. The central site was still very nice and the Loch was only an extra 20 meters walk. There is no shower facility, but that is not a huge issue. The site rangers are very friendly and ready to help with your needs as well. The biggest downfall was during the night with neighbors who were extremely loud/drunk well past midnight. I don't mind people staying up later during the weekend to talk, but this was beyond talking and carried on until 2am. I suppose it just depends on the day you camp that will determine how loud your neighbors are. It may have been quieter as well if we had a Loch side campsite. Overall this is a nice campsite and I would recommend it to anyone passing by or looking for a short weekend trip.

We stumbled across Sallochy Campsite by chance. We were totally taken aback by its isolation from the rest of the 'east coast' of Loch Lomond - stunning! If showers and hot water are your thing - this site is not for you. If you want isolation, peace and quiet with nature and an eco-loo to boot, then this is most definitely for you. The site has 10 individual tent pitches along the shore of Loch Lomond, each pitch is totally independent from the next. No-one is camping on each other's shoulders, you have the flora and fauna in between you. Its idyllic. There is a 'central' field slightly back from the shore for those who have children and wish to keep them safe from the waters edge. There is an excellent Forestry Commission warden who is around and on and off the site for any queries you may have - a must is the pit fires and stand for both keeping away the midges (in August), keeping warm on the cooler evening sand cooking your dinner on. At a cost of £10 per night including logs it is an absolute must. You're asking yourself now is there any downside to this beautiful location - yes!! Beware of the midges in late summer especially whilst it is wet and/or damp. A hat with a net or a head net is an absolute must - insect creams and repellents don't work, they'll eat you alive if they find you attractive! All in all a stunning location - isolated and peaceful at one with nature. Beautiful.

Two friends and I booked a pitch at Sallochy Bay for three nights. We are used to wild camping but as this is banned on the east coast of Loch Lomond so we went on the hunt for a campsite and stumbled across here and were not disappointed. It has the basic amenities that everyone needs; a good surface to pitch a tent, toilets and running water. The staff were very friendly also. The location was superb, amazing views and we enjoyed every minute, will definitely be back. The midges weren't as bad as they can get but we had plenty of Skin so Soft anyway. Just to add I made an error with my booking and booked for 01/07 in error when I wanted 01/08. I didn't realise this until about 3 weeks after the 01/07 but the staff were very understanding and amended my booking no problem.

A wonderful campsite for tents. As a forestry commission camp site it doesn't offer 'facilities' beyond clean toilets and sinks with drinking water taps but the lakeside pitches are absolutely wonderful - beautiful, private, and a perfect view of the Loch. You can get a mobile fire pit and wood for a camp fire, and the people looking after you are extremely friendly and helpful.

Fantastic location, very well managed site - the forestry commission guys do an excellent job in maintaining the site, my son and I had a great night would certainly camp there again.

Excellent value for money. The statf were very friendly and helpful. For 10GBP you can get a mobile fire pit and some firewood. There is a lot of midges so get yourself some spray and a hat with a net to keep them at bay as they can be a real pain in the neck!

We stayed overnight to introduce my son to camping. We wanted somewhere beautiful yet not too far away, with an experience of the wild yet with some basic facilities- Sallochy fitted the bill perfectly. We had a great night, ably assisted by the rangers who could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Great value and a great time- thanks!

The campsite itself was very nice, beautifully located. We were walking the West Highland Way and although the campsite is right on the route we hadn't realised the massive climb up to the campsite or how far in it was from the dot on the footprint map lablled Sallocy - but I guess that was our bad planning. I just mention it so future campers are warned. There was composting toilets which were clean and smell-free, running drinking water. We had a lochside pitch which gave us gorgeous views despite our midge headnets. The central area looked nicer than I thought it would be. There was a rubbish bin too which was handy as we needed to dispose of ours. The warden wasn't there when we arrived at six. We tried to call the Forestry Commission as their number was on the sign but it was outside office hours. However after asking a fellow camper we discovered the warden is shared between two camps and we managed to catch him on his final call into the camp. Although everything was nice I would have prefered to camp wild properly - there's no lack of fresh water around that area and I found the breeze of the composting toilets worse than digging a hole. A free campsite with no facilities would have been better but considering the new bye-laws I guess we were really paying for the location.

For what you pay, this was excellent. Beautiful scenery, excellent pitches. The park rangers were very friendly and helpful. There are compost toilets that were a first a bit off putting but still clean. For a 1 or 2 night get away this is perfect.

Beautiful campsite - stunning loch side pitches. Only drawback is no shower facility (unless you go for a swim!) Would definitely stay here again. Also got the option of buying food close by (in Rowardennan or Balmaha) if you can't be bothered getting the camping stove out.

It's a very beautiful spot with clean compost toilets and a sink outside. There is no shower facility so keep that in mind. Staff [read Rangers] are very nice people, keen to help if you need it. Please not that if you arrive between 14.00 and 16.00 there will be no Ranger around [probably] as that is 'in between shifts' time. All in all: recommended! One more thing: midges, midges, midges so be prepared!

Really beautiful spot for camping. The toilets were fine (water less) - there are no showers. Heaps of midges, and the weather was rubbish when we stayed. However, a roaring fire on the shore of the loch cannot be beaten,

It was certainly a memorable stay. After putting aside the uncontrollable variables such as weather, we had a very pleasant stay. The location is beautiful and the facilities are exceptional. We especially appreciated the compost toilets, ample bins and dish-washing sink. The park rangers were also very helpful and polite. They certainly added a feeling of security and support to the experience. We only had one main observation regarding the campsite management and it was the lack of midge repellent measures such as lamps or naturally repellent scenting around the campsite. We understand that this responsibility is partly down to the campers but due to the sheer amount of midges I think the camp site would benefit from investing in something to mitigate this.

Arrived on the 11th of June later than expected 7.30pm but ranger was still there to greet us, we had booked two loch side pitches for three nights but managed to get two tents onto the one pitch easily, only cost £15 each for the three nights which was very reasonable compared to other sites on the east side that wanted around £20 a NIGHT only difference being those sites had showers and a shop. Sallochy had composting toilets which were very clean but a little drafty on the bum, also had dish washing sinks with drinking water at the side of the toilet block. The site has gates which are locked when ranger leaves at 8pm so no hooligans coming in late at night, think the wild camping ban may have put the undesirables off their late night drinking sessions as we did not see any rowdy groups the time we were there in fact we had the whole site to ourselves the first night. couple of tips, TAKE A MIDGEY NET you will need it, hire the fire pit it is well worth it cost £10 for the first night and that came with a bag of logs £5 per bag after that, we had the works van with us which had a large pallet in it, it burned a lot better than the logs so if you can chop some fire wood before you go all the better. also need a £10 deposit for fire pit which you get back on day of leaving. another tip don't leave food outside your tent at night the ducks will have it and wake you up about 3am lol... Loch side pitches were right next to the west highland way and had a few walkers going past but all were friendly and stopped for a chat, we were out on kayaks for most of the day well away from the campsite and the tents were always fine when we came back but we did lock any valuables in the van before we left. All in it was a great few days on loch Lomond, campsite was great would defiantly use again, as I said it was really quiet when we were there and don't know if it will attract the undesirables in peak season but the rangers onsite should keep that under control.................... Arrived at the site and found it clean tidy and well marked out the site I had on the loch side was well positioned and apart from the midgies it was great just to sit and relax I was only there for 1 night and the cost (£5.00) was reasonable for the services provided the toilets were clean and tidy I am not sure about the composting toilets obviously good for the environment but am not convinced about the long term if there is problems with upkeep/maintenance? the staff rangers were friendly and helpful overall a nice place to spend a night if walking the west highland way

We had the most stunning weather for our stay and i think the best pitch on the loch side (pitch 7). We struggled a bit at night as with the weather being so good there was partying all night, not the end of the world though. We were nearly carried off by midge's in the morning and look like we have chicken pox but had expected that and been well warned! It is such an ideal location and a lovely site and we would stay again. Next time making sure our mobile phones are charged as we would have got someone to stop the partying a little ealier, our fault as we were given number etc to deal with this, just had 2 flat phones. The rangers were wonderful and so helpful.

Really lovely situation and good choice of pitches. The fire pits you can hire from the wardens are great, and the wardens are really helpful with getting your fire started. Really enjoyed our stay here.
