Workers distilled pyroligneous acid from the wood, and used it to fix dyes in the great textile factories of the Vale of Leven.

Now you can enjoy the popular and picturesque woodland site which is ideal for families, walkers and those wanting to experience a short outdoor break in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.

First time camping at Sallochy Bay campsite. Arrived to a warm welcome from ranger and was able to pick my flat lochside spot. Site was quiet but it was a Sunday night. Hired a fire pit with plenty of wood for the night and think this helped as a midgie deterrent. Compostable toilets were very clean. Great location for walking or just relaxing and enjoying the views.

Sallochy campsite really is a gem, right on the shoreline of Loch Lomond. The setting is stunning, really a must see. The rangers are really friendly and the firepits are affordable compared to other sites (£5/night hire + £5/bag of logs) and really add to the experience. Beware if you are going anywhere on Loch Lomond, come prepared for midges!! They are everywhere!! Make sure you have plenty of repellent or better, a net. You can buy these from the rangers too if you need to. This is a very family friendly site, which made us much more comfortable.

This is a basic campsite - it is a little more equipped than wild camping, but not much! As long as you are clear about this, it is fine. (For some reason, I had thought that there would be showers - there aren't, and there is no hot water.) Also, it was a trek going across the site to the toilet/water block, especially after a hard day of walking - but at least there were toilets and running (cold) water! Beware - there were also a lot of midges! The warden was very helpful, and being able to camp next to the shores of Loch Lomond was beautiful. I also liked the fact that the baggage drop cabinet was locked. One disappointing aspect was the lack of recycling facilities - I was unable to find any. Given that this is linked to the Forestry Commission, this was suprising. If I come up to this area again, I would happily camp here.

Great site on the banks of the Loch, clean and easily accessed. The control of pitches could be better enforced as people were in the process of pitching before the mandated two o'clock threshold.

I camped here with my sister as part of our west highland way hike. Upon arrival, the woman who checked us in was incredibly kind and friendly. The grounds were clean, no rubbish lying around. Beautiful surrounding- we spent our evening playing cards on the beach and then had breakfast there the next day. With it being close to the water, midiges were a minor issue but nothing you can do about that! There is drinking water, toilets and various camping utilities availed for use but we did not need these.

I love this campsite. The location is stunning, it's clean and well looked after without being sterile . It really does feel like you are out in nature. The rangers are always welcoming and friendly I was there midweek to the Saturday of the bank holiday weekend and noticed a huge increase in late night noise on the Friday evening which made me think the booking instructions about groups and alcohol were not being checked. This is a problem on lots of other sites and one of the reasons I come here as a woman on my own. There seemed to be fewer rangers on site so this may be contributing too.

We were to stay at this campsite for two nights as a family. When we arrived it was nice and clean. The eco-toilets were managed well. I suspect the lochside pitches are quieter - the central pitch gets quite busy and people do not always stick to the no-pitching-within-6-meters-of-each-other rule. We didn't get much sleep. Still, it would have been ok, but the next day, Saturday, about 50 cars descended on the campsite as it is open to day visitors (as part of the West Highland Way, I suppose). The place became far from the quiet retreat we hoped for. The toilets got overused and rather dirty. We decided to leave. One guy even managed to start a bin fire by throwing two hot barbecues in. We had to put it out before leaving.

We found this campsite to be perfect for our needs on the West Highland Way. It's on the trail itself so you can't miss it! There are compost toilets and fresh drinking water (although these are quite a little way from some of the loch-side pitches). The loch-side pitches are beautiful but some of them do back directly onto the trail so aren't particularly private, but greeting the walkers as they pass is not necessarily a bad thing! Firewood and pits were provided at a cost which was useful, and the rangers were available and friendly.

A very helpful feature would be a campers' shelter - big enough for three or four picnic tables. I think this could blend in the beautiful setting if set at the back in the campers parking area. Somewhere to pack, unpack, eat, sit and chat etc out of the rain is a transforming feature for any campsite that caters for trekkers.

We cycled & set up camp after dark in the rain on the central pitch. Woke up to a beautiful view across the lake. Staff are so friendly and helpful. You can get fire pits, wood and some other things from them if you need it. Fire pit bbq on the beach, just idyllic. Be careful where you pitch we ended up in a boggy bit but the surrounding areas were fine. Compost toilets are good and there is a sink for washing up and water. Remote location in the middle of the woods, the nearest shop is in Balmaha.
